How it began

A few months ago I wanted to bring my grandma something simple—not flowers or food. I thought of something made of fabric with a friendly face. I picked a Puffy wearing a little tee and slipped it into a humble box.

I walked into the living room with the box in my hands and the radio playing softly. She was finishing a hem. I didn’t say much: I sat down and set the box on the table.

When she opened it, she lifted the little bear carefully, as if it were a porcelain piece. I ran my hand over its back and she laid her own hand on top—wrinkled hands side by side.

It wasn’t a big laugh or a dramatic scene: it was a small, gentle gesture. She told me it reminded her of the doll she had when she was young, and I thought that sometimes gifts act like bridges to memory.
