Routines rule at school. That day, when I opened the classroom door, I thought about how to let one of my students know we were expecting him without making a fuss.

The idea of leaving a Puffy

He came back after several weeks, part nervous and part unsure. No one forced him; I just wanted him to sit down and find something that would make him smile without questions.

I placed a Puffy on his desk, with his school shirt folded beside it. I didn't hide it; I left it as if it had always belonged in the classroom.
