Why I did it

They go for a run every morning because it helps them think. Sometimes they come back weighed down by the world; other times, smiling. I wanted that day to be a smile without splinters: a small, unexpected gesture.

I left it on their route

I chose the bench where they always take a short break, the one facing the pond. I didn’t want a big declaration, just a soft companion waiting at the end of the loop.

I tucked the Puffy into a large cloth bag, attached a short note, and placed it carefully on the backrest, like another person waiting. I walked away with my heart a little fluttery, the way you feel when you do something mischievous but sweet.

How they found it

It broke the routine: they told me that on the second lap they saw something soft on the bench and went to take a closer look. The note read, "For when you come back, so someone is waiting." They laughed, hugged it, and sent a photo because they knew I’d be peeking.
