Coming home to someone waiting

I'd had a long day: a delayed train, phone calls and a light rain on my umbrella. I opened the door, dropped my bag and climbed the stairs thinking of the sofa and some quiet. On the bed, on the coverlet, there was a Puffy with one of my T-shirts folded on top.

The scene

It wasn't wrapped or surrounded by fanfare. My partner had left it just like that: the little bear sitting, the shirt with my scent (a clean, homely smell) and a small folded note by its arm.

I sat on the edge of the bed and laughed at how absurd and perfect the gesture was. It was a tiny companion that felt like home.

How the night went

I left it on the pillow beside me, like a little guardian. We didn't do much: we had a quick dinner, chatted about silly things and fell asleep with the hallway light on.

The next day the shirt was still on him, rumpled and heroic. It was a small detail that didn't fix anything big, but it made me come home to rest and laugh at my little dramas for an afternoon.

Since then Puffy has a favorite shirt in the wardrobe and turns up in our clumsy phone photos. He reminds me that sometimes the things that help most are the ones that ask for nothing in return.
