How it began

I knew there was a rehearsal. He always leaves his guitar at the venue and comes back late. It wasn’t anything big: I wanted him to find something that would make him smile among the cables and sheet music.

Preparing it

I tucked it inside his guitar case, between a spare string and the pick pouch. The little bear wore a simple tee, so it wouldn’t get in the way or get lost among bigger things.

I felt a strange flutter: having something so tiny ready for when he opened the case, imagining his face before he even saw it.

The reveal

I didn’t go to the rehearsal; I wanted it to be a surprise. After the soundcheck he sent me a photo: the bear peeking out and his guitar in the background. It was a small picture that made me smile all night.

• Before I picked the quietest tee so it wouldn’t draw attention.
• During I hid it among the spare strings inside the case.
• After I got the photo: him holding the bear and laughing under the venue’s red lights.

Later he told me he left it on the sofa next to the guitar like it was just another belonging, and that he liked the idea of something soft waiting for him at home.
