How to store your Puffy to keep its shape, scent and clothes
Simple techniques, safe materials, and step-by-step tips depending on storage time. Because a well-stored Puffy comes back like new when you hug it.
Before you start
Storing Puffy properly protects its shape, prevents unwanted smells, and keeps interchangeable clothing in good condition. You don't need fancy tools—just a few clear steps and basic materials so your little bear will feel like a hug when you bring it out again.
Why store your Puffy
A plush stored carelessly can lose volume, wrinkle its clothes, or pick up moisture and odors. Storing it correctly keeps the texture and helps it keep showing love when you play with it again.
Note: Storing doesn't mean hiding. Think of storage that preserves and keeps the surprise of opening it.
Preparation: cleaning & inspection
Before storing, inspect and prepare. These steps prevent stains, mites or bad smells from getting into the container.
- 1) Check seams and accessories: check buttons, eyes or loose parts. If something is loose, sew it or set it aside before storing.
- 2) Air and brush: air your Puffy for 1–2 hours and brush with a soft-bristle brush to remove surface dust.
- 3) Spot cleaning: for small stains use a damp cloth with mild soap and air dry. Avoid soaking the stuffing.
- 4) Clothes separately: store clean, dry interchangeable clothes in cloth bags to prevent smells and wrinkles.
Short-term storage (1–4 weeks)
Ideal for when you switch seasons or need to free up space for a short time. Priority is dust protection without squashing the volume.
-
ABreathable bag
Use a fabric bag or a cotton cover. Avoid sealed plastic bags: they trap moisture and can leave an odor.
-
BPosition
Place Puffy lying on its back or sitting, in a single layer. Do not stack objects on top.
-
CEnvironment
Keep it in a ventilated closet, away from radiators or direct sunlight.
Long-term storage (months or more)
For prolonged storage add barriers against moisture, insects, and crushing while keeping airflow.
- Choose a sturdy container or a quality cardboard box. Stackable boxes with lids work well if they won't be crushed.
- Line the base with tissue paper or a clean towel. Do not use plastic directly on the plush.
- Clothes in separate cloth bags: place clean garments in breathable bags and position them around, not inside the plush's body.
- Protect against moisture: place silica gel packs or moisture-absorbing sachets outside the plush (not in direct contact). Replace every 2–3 months if possible.
- Avoid strong perfumes or air fresheners next to the plush. A small piece of fabric with the soft scent of home is better than intense chemical fragrances.
Puffy tip: if you store several pieces, separate them with cardboard or fabric so they don't deform each other.
Common mistakes that harm shape and scent
-
1Storing wet
The most frequent mistake: moisture causes odors and mold. Make sure everything is completely dry.
-
2Sealed plastic bags
Although they save space, they prevent air circulation and concentrate odors. Use them only if the plush is perfectly dry and for very short periods.
-
3Stacking on the plush
Keep the area clear: stacking boxes on top squashes the filling and deforms the silhouette.
Occasional care & fluff recovery
When you take Puffy out after some time, follow these quick steps to bring back life and softness.
- Air for 2–4 hours in a dry, shaded place.
- Brush in the direction of the fur with a soft brush; dry the fabric with a hairdryer on cool at a low distance if you notice slight moisture.
- To recover volume: gently squeeze body areas to redistribute the filling. Avoid sudden tugs.
- Check the interchangeable clothes and iron them at low temperature if needed before dressing Puffy.

Can I use vacuum bags to save space?
Not recommended for soft-stuffed plushes: compressing too much can permanently deform them. If you decide to use one, don't leave it for long and make sure the plush is completely dry.
How do I avoid smells when storing it for months?
Air and clean before storing, use moisture absorbers outside the plush, and avoid strong air fresheners. A piece of clean fabric with the scent of home can be enough.
Can I store Puffy with its clothes on?
If the clothes are clean and not too tight, yes for short periods. For long periods, it's better to store clothes separately in cloth bags to avoid marks and wrinkles.
How often should I check a stored plush?
If stored long-term, check every 2–3 months to air it and replace moisture absorbers. This helps avoid unpleasant surprises.
