Returning a jacket and leaving something more

I went to their house to return a jacket I’d been wearing for a week. The afternoon had been tense; we’d argued about small things and I wanted to fix it without big words. I thought of leaving something that felt warm, without forcing anything.

Why a Puffy

My idea was simple: place the Puffy on the armchair, drape the jacket over its shoulders, as if someone were waiting to come back to the kitchen. It wouldn’t fit in small bags, so I carried it in my arms and set it down quietly, with the house smelling clean and sauce still warming on the stove.

I wanted it to be a wordless invitation—something that asked the other person to stay without asking anything in return.

Setting it up and waiting

Getting the Puffy ready was quick: I picked clothes that matched the jacket and placed the note on its lap. I didn’t want drama, just a small offer of company in a tiny detail.

The smile was small, but enough. In the end we sat down to eat and talked without the tension. The note stayed folded in the Puffy's pocket; the jacket returned to me, this time hanging on the chair back, and they chose to stay.
