I told them we were just stepping out for some fresh air, nothing more. In truth I’d slipped the Puffy into a box between my jacket and a blanket. Our building’s rooftop faces the sunset and it felt like the perfect place to make the gift about a shared moment, not just an object.

How I prepared it

I spread the blanket near the drying area, set a small solar lamp and placed the Puffy on the blanket, looking toward the horizon. There were no big notes, just a tiny tag sewn into the bear’s outfit with a word I know they like.

I sat to the side, hands cold and phone tucked away. The plan was simple: keep the surprise low-key, just company and shared quiet.

The reaction, in a few brief strokes
