Why a little, silly surprise works

When words fall short or turn gray, a small gesture can say a lot. I hadn’t planned anything epic: I just wanted him to feel seen again.

The idea

My partner had been going to the gym for weeks feeling low; when he came out, his eyes looked heavy. I thought about telling him, about writing a note, but in the end I chose something he could find without me having to explain in the moment.

I picked a Puffy with his favorite outfit and placed it in the bag between the towel and the shirt. I wanted it to be private: for him to discover it during a routine moment.

How I prepared it

I slipped it into the bag the night before, with the lights low so I wouldn’t wake him. I left no note; I wanted a wordless smile. The plush smelled fresh and looked so perfectly his that I almost felt too soft closing the zipper.

It wasn’t a perfect scene: he didn’t jump for joy or anything. He paused for a second looking at it and then let out that short laugh he does when something really surprises him.
