When I tucked Puffy into the guitar case

It was a small, loving trick: I slipped him into his case before the show so he’d find something soft among the strings. I didn’t expect the photo they sent me from the dressing room.

The little mischief

My partner hadn’t played live for months; nerves, a crazy schedule and the usual insecurity after such a break. I knew their hands were shaking more from the heart than from the fingers.

I tucked him into the case

I came into the venue with little excuses: help with the strings, bring a cable, the usual. While I was unpacking the guitar, I put Puffy on the white tarp on the floor and, without them noticing, I placed him next to the neck, tucked into the foam of the case. He didn’t fit in some tiny silly pocket; he was cozy, curled up beside the guitar.

The little bear smelled fresh, like clean laundry, and it hit me with a little tenderness that made me smile without meaning to.

The moment: I left him there so they would find him just before going on — like a hug that fits in a case.

I found it in the dressing room and hugged it; it calmed me more than any rehearsal.

After the show

It wasn’t a grand gesture: no billboard, no speech. But after the gig they sent me a photo from the dressing room: the case open and Puffy wearing one of their little shirts, peeking out like a tiny audience.

  • Before I went into the venue with the excuse of helping and hid Puffy in the case.
  • During They went on stage; I waited by the door with my heart in my throat.
  • After Photo from the dressing room: Puffy peeking out and a smile on their face.
  • Night We went home talking softly; the little bear stayed on the guitar for the next trip.

I realized there was no need for a big declaration: that simple gesture helped my partner go on stage with fewer butterflies. And it left me with a photo I look at when I want to smile.

What was left

Now Puffy travels in the case on short gigs. Not always — only when I think a surprise hug might help before going on stage. It’s a small, silly thing with an effect: I can almost hear them whisper that it reminded them why they started playing.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Puffy fit in a guitar case?

Yes: a guitar case has enough room for Puffy to be comfortable beside the protective foam. Avoid forcing him in and place the bear so he doesn’t press on the instrument.

Can you personalize Puffy’s outfit before hiding him?

Yes, you can choose an outfit that’s a little nod to the person who’ll find him — something they love or that reminds them of a shared moment.

Is it a good idea to do this before a concert?

It depends on the person: in this story it was meant to calm nerves. If you know the recipient well, it usually works as a quiet, loving support.
