When I tucked Puffy into the guitar case
It was a small, loving trick: I slipped him into his case before the show so he’d find something soft among the strings. I didn’t expect the photo they sent me from the dressing room.
The little mischief
My partner hadn’t played live for months; nerves, a crazy schedule and the usual insecurity after such a break. I knew their hands were shaking more from the heart than from the fingers.
I tucked him into the case
I came into the venue with little excuses: help with the strings, bring a cable, the usual. While I was unpacking the guitar, I put Puffy on the white tarp on the floor and, without them noticing, I placed him next to the neck, tucked into the foam of the case. He didn’t fit in some tiny silly pocket; he was cozy, curled up beside the guitar.
The little bear smelled fresh, like clean laundry, and it hit me with a little tenderness that made me smile without meaning to.
I found it in the dressing room and hugged it; it calmed me more than any rehearsal.
After the show
It wasn’t a grand gesture: no billboard, no speech. But after the gig they sent me a photo from the dressing room: the case open and Puffy wearing one of their little shirts, peeking out like a tiny audience.
